 Velocity News

Velocity NewsHappy Saturday everyone! Some of you may have been wondering what happened to your regular Tuesday delivery of our newsletter. We've found that it's a little easier for our partners, clients and friends to read through the material when it's not so hectic at work. Saturday afternoon seemed a good a time as any but let us know your thoughts on this if you like.

We've included a couple new features in our newsletter in an effort to continually provide you useful information. These new features are Partner Focus - which includes some information on both strategic and technology partners of ours, Around L.A. - which provides some useful links to what's happening around our community this month, and we've also thrown in an inspiring quote - because hey, why not. A little inspiration never hurt anybody.

Though our SteadyCloud
small business cloud computing offering is in full effect. The website is still under development as we're refining it's ease of use for new visitors. A press release will anounce it's unveiling in the next month or so.

Have any ideas on useful content we can include? You can send us feedback from the contact page or you can email me, Dustin Hall, directly at
marketing@velocityns.com. Thank you!

Google's Panda Update:
Is Your Site Taking a Hit?

Google Panda Angry
Do you focus on SEO as part of your lead generation strategy? The odds are high that with the latest Panda updates from Google, their new algorithms are knocking you down a peg or two...or 10. What the heck is happening here?!

The New Change:

A Backlink Builder’s Nightmare

While Google reveals only limited information about their methods, what is revealed seems to affect almost every business that’s been aggressively using SEO methods to maintain online presence in their market. While the jury is out on just how deep the new algorithms go, one thing is clear: You can no longer build links for the sake of building links! Quality is king now. Again, because this change is so new and it takes time for experts to “successfully” analyze what’s going on, this is merely a prematurely proposed solution for your website woes.

The Possible Solution:
De-optimization, Are You Crazy?

De-optimization. Why would anybody in their right mind do such a thing? Well, for starters many websites and SEO “gurus” have historically taken advantage of Google’s algorithmic weaknesses. That’s the goal isn’t it? Not anymore. Due to keyword stuffing and ridiculously useless content geared toward pleasing Google’s bots and not site visitors, Google has unleashed this vicious Panda upon our sites.

Here’s what you now need to focus on:

Informative & Pertinent Content – write your website’s content to reflect what visitors may want to read. If the content is great and related to that site's or page's message, the crucial keywords you need should come naturally. Well, for the most part. Just don’t try too hard. Keep your body keywords around 3-5 and don’t over-optimize your H1 headers or have multiple H1 headers.

Solid Links from Reputable Sources – this one is easy. Getting backlinks from linkbuildersRus.com or collegepartychicks.com is not going to help your law firm, financial services or other non-related business gain any rankings (or clients for that matter).

Keep things simple. Write content that people, not robots would want to read. Pursue linking to other sites like you’d pursue local partner relationships and you should escape clutches of this crazy Panda. But not before he gets a few nibbles in.

Ninnies & Nincompoops:
Hiring the Right Employees

Small Business ResourcesIn the slumber of our economy loaded with so many unemployed looking to get their foot in the door, it’s a hiring dream out there...then we wake up!  A ton of applicants, check. Lots of shiny resumes, check. Ample talent, che…uh, hmm. What’s happening to our workforce and why does it seem to be so difficult for small business owners to hire qualified and talented employees? Let’s examine this issue by considering the approach to hiring the next "employee of the month".

Character vs. Money

“I started this guy at $100k/yr and he’s over there watching Lord of the Rings on his iPad!” Quite an exaggeration but we all get the point here. Offering more money for a position might hook a few extra qualified candidates but it doesn’t always get you better talent. I’ve talked to a lot of business owners, from our field of small business IT services, to law firms, to manufacturing and others. The consensus is, people either have a great work ethic or they don’t. This doesn’t mean your star player will accept peanuts but it does mean that simply offering a competitive salary and reasonable benefits will cover your bases when seeking out new applicants.

College vs. Trade School

I read a recent article on finding employees with specialized skills where business owners were venting their frustration in having a slew of unskilled, college graduates applying for their open spots. Everybody is always ranting about how there are so many young college grads out there without careers and yet few are touting the value of technical school experience. Because of the strong push for youngsters to go to college, many of them are bypassing technical schools. Thus, many technical industries are inundated with Sociology majors and thin on qualified technicians. Getting involved with relevant local trade schools via internship programs and events is a great way to keep a presence among soon-to-be grads.

Craigslist vs. Monster

In my opinion, unless you’re looking for a CEO with 20 years of experience for a $150k job, you’re just as likely to find qualified employees on Craigslist as you are on any of these higher priced job posting sites like Monster.com or Careerbuilder.com. Now, I’m not saying that these sites shouldn’t serve as additional resources for your listings but don’t underestimate the power of Craigslist when it comes to finding a good employee. I’ve known many small business owners to turn their noses up at sites like Craigslist because they feel their job position is “better than that,” as in, “I’m not listing my business opportunities on a site where people buy used couches.” Why would you not want to take advantage of a site that’s inexpensive, geographically focused, not overrun with ads and draws millions of different types of people? Suck it up, get that job listing posted and you might as well see what deals are out there on digital cameras while you’re at it.

Quick Tech Tip

3 Tips for Mobile Data Protection

Your mobile data is always at risk and for most of us, our whole life lies inside our iPhones! Life without out it is unimaginable. Much like when you leave the house, forgetting your cell phone and can't quite determine why you feel naked even though your clothes are on. Anyway, you get the point and here are 3 tips to keep you from being "exposed".

1. "Jailbreaking" is cool...yet dangerous
All the customization in the world won't do you any good once you have to wipe your phone's memory just to be able to call someone again. Jailbreaking your iPhone dramatically increases your chance of getting viruses and often, your only option to clear them is to wipe your phone. Not cool.

2. Use Passwords and Locks
Doing simple things like activating the encryption option, using password protection and any autolock security features will greatly decrease your odds of getting hacked or just plain ripped off.

3. Back It Up
Just like your work computers require (or should require) backups, so does your mobile device. The benefits of backing up your mobile device are obvious. Just ask yourself what you would do if it crashes. If the answer is "cry", your in for some trouble. If your answer is "cry and then recover your data", you're doing alright.

Apple's New iPad 3:
Is it Worth the Upgrade?

The tablet Gods have shined upon us again and given us the iPad 3. Now let’s all stand in line for 3 days, sleeping in a tent while peeking out the corner every now and again to make sure there are no “cutters” keeping us from attaining this masterpiece. Or let’s not. So, is the new iPad 3 really different enough for earlier iPad owners to make the switch? The new features are mostly internal but it depends It depends on what you use it for.

4G 4U
“Yay!” say the hasty tablet web surfers, who absolutely must have Angry Birds dowload this very second. All sarcasm aside, this really is a nifty feature for just about everyone out there and was certainly overdue. 4G is a powerful term these days. Thus, the LTE (Long Term Evolution) support is a win and a sharp improvement over earlier versions of the iPad. There are those of us (myself included) who thought the iPhone 4 was 4G and moved in for the purchase only to find out it wasn’t. So, what kept us happy? The Retina display of course!
Retina Display
This is such a deal sealer. Apple’s Retina display is simply gorgeous. Most iPhone users are already aware of its beauty but iPad users have yet to be graced with such vivid colors and detail…until now.
Say “cheese!”
The iPad 3 comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera that trumps the previous 0.7 megapixel dinosaur on the iPad 2 (the original iPad didn’t even have a camera).  Though it’s still not comparable to the iPhone 4S’s 8 megapixel camera, it does draw on the same technology and creates exponentially better photos than previous versions.
Chipset Improvement
Just as there was a vast improvement in performance from the original iPad to iPad 2, an equal jump in performance can be found once again within the iPad 3’s 1GB RAM and quad-core graphics processor. The downside being that the iPad 3 shares the iPad 2’s dual-core 1GHz CPU processor. This makes the speed of computing between the two relatively the same. Bummer.
Overall, the decision to upgrade is going to come down to the classic price vs. rewards comparison. If you want sharper images, better photos and 4G capability, it might be worth the $500 setback.

3 Amazing Entrepreneurs:
What Small Business Owners can Learn from Them

Many people dream of someday owning their own business. This popular endeavor, however, may have a lot of big dreamers but few serious “doers”. These 3 incredible entrepreneurs have both the dreaming and action down to a science and have had a tremendous impact on our society today. We can all certainly learn a thing or two from these power players and their indomitable spirits.
Jeff Bezos
The short & skinny: Owns a little biz called Amazon that’s worth about $84 billion and employs over 55,000 people. Jeff was not a big fan of his boss so he left New York City for the developer friendly city of Seattle, WA where he launched Amazon in 1994. It was not an instant success by any means (it didn’t turn a profit for the first 6 years) but Jeff mushed on.
Lesson for the rest of us: Jeff departs on mini vacations at the end of every quarter as to not get bogged down by the frantic nature of office life. Not just to sit on the beach and sip on Mai Thais, but more to think quietly and research without interruptions. This keeps him thinking objectively, high-level and contributes to many of his innovative ideas. His executive team then refines and builds them out.
Bill Gates
The short & skinny: Founded the Microsoft Corporation worth around $70 billion and employs nearly 90,000 people. He’s had a unique run having ushered in the age of the PC and also as one of the world’s most influential philanthropists, helping solve issues of world hunger and education simultaneously.
Lesson for the rest of us: Like Jeff, Bill really focused on building small teams of extremely bright people. People like Paul Allen and Steve Ballmer (Bill’s successor at Microsoft). Gates used this strategy humbly in an effort to create checks and balances for himself.
John Mackey
The short & skinny: Owns a local corner store called Whole Foods worth about $15 billion and employs roughly 56,000 people. Mackey started Whole Foods in Austin, TX back in 1978 with little intention of forming a grocery giant.
Lesson for the rest of us: John Mackey’s goal was, and still is, the steadfast focus on purpose and quality. Unlike the other two on this list, John was a college dropout. His success is a testament to the power of maintaining a simple and responsible direction within your business model, both socially and environmentally.

Gotcha Covered

Founded: 1996
Web: http://www.gotchacoveredusa.com
InfoGotcha Covered was launched when Lisa Bernath bought one of those new-fangled memory foam pillows sweeping the nation. When she couldn’t find a pillowcase to fit, she designed one herself. Lisa knew that there must be other people out there who were having the same problem, and convinced (begged) her childhood friend, Margalit Grunberger, to go into business with her. Together, they started the first odd-sized pillowcase company. With prototypes in hand, they pitched their odd idea to a national back care retailer. The managers were thrilled that someone had finally made the decision to fill their customers’ needs. The original idea propelled them into a niche business, marking the company as THE odd-sized bedding specialists. Gotcha Covered has blossomed and now offers luxurious high-end sheets, premium mattress & pillow protectors, bedskirts, pillowcases for visco pillows, duvet covers, blankets and more.  Their line of products can be found at retailers nationwide as well as hotels and B&Bs.

Quick Tech Tip

The Power of Using Screenshots

Taking screenshots is an excellent way to show others what you see. Whether you're trying to resolve a technical issue, advise a graphic designer or simply just show someone a new item without having them dig through the link, taking a screenshot is a breeze.

Windows Users:
The PrintScreen key (top right) makes a copy of your entire screen as an image on your invisible clipboard. You can attach this in an email or save it in a folder.
Most will also have a "snipping tool" in your Accessories folder of the Program menu. I recommend pinning this to your desktop for quick access. It lets you draw around the area you want to create an image of and even draw on it.

Mac Users:
Press Command-Shift-3 to take a screenshot. You'll hear a photo snapping sound and it will place the image on your desktop.
Command-Shift-4 will give you little crosshairs you can use to outline the image you want to take or press spacebar for a camera window to do the same.

* if you're taking a full screenshot, remember to close any sensitive info before snapping away!
